📅 Last updated: January 2025 🇳🇬 Governed by Nigerian law

Overview

Welcome to SweetBill ("Company", "we", "us", or "our"). This Privacy Policy explains how SweetBill (sweetbill.ng) collects, uses, discloses, and safeguards your information when you use our mobile application and website.

By using SweetBill, you agree to the practices described in this Privacy Policy. If you disagree with any part, please discontinue use of our services. We are committed to protecting your personal data in accordance with applicable Nigerian data protection laws, including the Nigeria Data Protection Regulation (NDPR) issued by NITDA.

Information We Collect

Personal Information You Provide

When you register or use SweetBill, we collect information you voluntarily provide, including: full name, phone number, email address, billing information, and authentication credentials (username/password). We do not store your full card details — payments are processed through secure, certified third-party payment processors.

Transaction Data

We collect records of all transactions made through SweetBill, including transaction amounts, dates, timestamps, service type (data, airtime, electricity, etc.), recipient phone numbers or meter numbers, and transaction reference IDs.

Usage & Device Data

We automatically collect certain technical information when you use our app or website: device type, operating system, app version, IP address, browser type, pages visited, time spent on pages, and clickstream data. This helps us improve performance and detect fraud.

Location Information

We may collect approximate location data (based on IP address) to comply with regulatory requirements, improve our fraud detection, and tailor services to your region.

How We Use Your Information

Service Delivery

Your information is primarily used to process your transactions, manage your SweetBill account, and deliver the services you request (data, airtime, bill payments, etc.). This is the core purpose of all data collection.

Security & Fraud Prevention

We use your data to verify your identity, detect suspicious activity, prevent unauthorised access, and protect both you and SweetBill from fraudulent transactions.

Communication

We use your contact details to send transaction confirmations, receipts, account alerts, security notifications, and — if you have opted in — promotional offers, cashback updates, and product announcements.

Improvement & Analytics

Aggregated and anonymised usage data helps us improve the SweetBill platform, fix bugs, optimise performance, and develop new features that better serve our users.

Legal Compliance

We process and retain certain data as required by Nigerian financial regulations, including AML (Anti-Money Laundering) and KYC (Know Your Customer) requirements applicable to electronic payment services.

Information Sharing

We Do Not Sell Your Data

SweetBill does not sell, rent, or trade your personal information to third parties for their own marketing purposes. Period.

Service Providers

We share necessary data with trusted third-party service providers who help us deliver our services — including payment processors, SMS/notification providers, cloud hosting providers, and analytics services. All are bound by strict data processing agreements.

Network Operators & Billers

To fulfil your transactions, we share relevant data (such as phone numbers or meter numbers) with the appropriate network operators (MTN, Glo, Airtel, 9Mobile) or billers (electricity companies, DSTV, GOtv, Startimes).

Legal Requirements

We may disclose your information if required by law, court order, or regulatory authority — including the CBN, NITDA, or Nigerian law enforcement agencies — where we are legally obligated to do so.

Business Transfers

In the event of a merger, acquisition, or sale of SweetBill assets, your information may be transferred to the acquiring entity. We will notify you before any such transfer and give you the option to delete your account.

Data Security

Encryption

All data transmitted between your device and SweetBill servers is encrypted using industry-standard TLS (Transport Layer Security). Sensitive data at rest is stored using AES-256 encryption.

Access Controls

Access to user data is strictly limited to authorised SweetBill personnel on a need-to-know basis. All employees with data access undergo background checks and are bound by confidentiality obligations.

Monitoring

We continuously monitor our systems for suspicious activity, unauthorised access attempts, and potential data breaches. Our incident response plan ensures rapid action in case of any security event.

Your Responsibility

You are responsible for maintaining the confidentiality of your SweetBill login credentials. Never share your password or OTP with anyone — not even SweetBill staff will ever ask for this.

Data Retention

Active Accounts

We retain your personal information for as long as your SweetBill account is active and for a period thereafter as required by Nigerian financial regulations — typically 5–7 years for transaction records under AML/CFT regulations.

Account Deletion

If you request account deletion, we will delete or anonymise your personal data within 30 days, except where retention is required by law. Transaction records may be retained in anonymised form for regulatory compliance.

Your Rights

Access & Portability

You have the right to request a copy of the personal data SweetBill holds about you, in a structured, machine-readable format.

Correction

You can request correction of any inaccurate or incomplete personal information we hold about you, directly from your account settings or by contacting support.

Deletion

Subject to legal retention obligations, you may request deletion of your personal data. To initiate this, contact us at support@sweetbill.ng with the subject line "Data Deletion Request".

Opt-Out of Marketing

You can opt out of marketing communications at any time by using the unsubscribe link in our emails or by updating your notification preferences in the SweetBill app.

Complaints

If you believe your data rights have been violated, you may file a complaint with the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), the Nigerian data protection authority.
